School of Visual Arts EMERGE '26 | Event Photography in New York City
A behind-the-scenes look at documenting keynote speakers, emerging designers, and creative innovation at one of New York City's premier design showcases.
Photographing EMERGE '26 at the School of Visual Arts
The School of Visual Arts' EMERGE '26 showcase brought together students, faculty, and leaders from across the creative industry for a day of presentations celebrating innovation in advertising, design, and emerging media.
Held in New York City, the event featured portfolio presentations, keynote talks, and conversations exploring how technology, storytelling, design, and artificial intelligence continue to reshape the creative landscape.
My role was to document the event while creating imagery that felt both editorial and authentic—capturing not only each presenter, but also the atmosphere, audience engagement, and visual experience that made the showcase memorable.
Photographing More Than Just Speakers
Strong event photography is about more than documenting who was on stage.
For conferences and university events, it's equally important to capture:
interactions between presenters
presentation visuals
branding throughout the venue
genuine moments that communicate the experience of attending the event
Throughout the event I focused on balancing wide environmental photographs with tighter editorial portraits, giving the School of Visual Arts a versatile collection of images for future marketing, social media, publications, and archival use.
Working in Challenging Stage Lighting
Conference venues present unique photographic challenges.
Speakers move unpredictably across the stage while projection screens and theatrical lighting create significant differences in brightness throughout the room.
By carefully exposing for both presenters and projected visuals, I was able to preserve detail in the speakers while maintaining the impact of the presentation slides that formed an important part of each talk.
The result is a gallery that reflects not only who spoke, but what they shared.
Why Event Photography Matters
Professional event photography becomes part of an organization's visual history.
High-quality imagery extends the life of an event long after it ends by supporting:
future marketing campaigns
press releases
annual reports
alumni communications
fundraising initiatives
websites
social media
recruitment materials
Creating images with longevity in mind ensures they remain valuable long after the applause has ended.
