Editorial Portrait Photography in New Jersey | Moody Test Shoot at the Art Factory
I loved working at The Art Factory in Paterson, New Jersey on my own. It didn’t happen as often as I wanted—usually I was there for a job. These images were from time I carved out for myself to explore portrait work in a more intuitive, self-directed way with a couple of beautiful friends who didn’t mind hopping in front of the camera and being asked to do weird things. “Please slowly exhale while whispering the word ‘prune.’”
What Is a Test Shoot in Portrait Photography?
A test shoot is where ideas take shape without the constraints of a client brief.
It’s a space to:
experiment with lighting and composition
explore new visual directions
refine the kind of work you want to be hired for
This shoot was about pushing further into editorial portraiture—creating images that feel cinematic, expressive, and grounded in mood.
A Study in Light and Character
The throughline in this work is light.
Some frames lean bright and direct—graphic, bold, and immediate. Others fall into shadow—quieter, more cinematic, more suggestive than explicit.
Across both, the intention stays the same:
light shapes the subject
shadow creates tension and depth
composition guides the viewer’s eye
The goal is to create presence.
Movement, Styling, and Story
Rather than locking into a single look or pose, this shoot allowed space for variation:
structured, fashion-forward portraits
expressive, in-between moments
close-up, detail-driven frames
wider, environmental compositions
Wardrobe, gesture, and posture all became part of the storytelling within a single image.
Why This Style Works for Brands and Editorial Clients
This kind of portrait photography sits at the intersection of fashion, branding, and storytelling.
It’s well-suited for:
personal brands and creative entrepreneurs
fashion and beauty campaigns
editorial features
musicians, artists, and performers
The images feel intentional, but not overly polished. They are stylized, true, but still human.
The Location: Texture and Versatility
The Art Factory was hands-down THE most versatile space I’ve ever worked in.
Its mix of:
industrial textures
large windows
open, flexible interiors
It was truly a photography playground.

Final Thoughts
Test shoots are less about producing content and more about defining direction.
This one was about presence, light, and range—and about continuing to shape a visual language that feels both intentional and flexible.
